Quotes

Ritual abuse is a "brutal form of abuse...consisting of physical, sexual and psychological abuse, and involving the use of rituals...the physical abuse is severe, sometimes including torture and killing."
1989 Report from the Los Angeles County Commission for Women Ritual Abuse Task Force.
http://www.geocities.com/kidhistory/ra.htm

Ritual Abuse-Torture is "intentionally planned and organized kin and/or non-kin brutal group ritualisms; acts of human evil that terrify and horrify; acts of pedophlic, physical, sexualized, and mind-spirit tortures; acts that can include modern day slavery..."
Ritual Abuse-Torture pamphlet, Jeanne Sarson, RN, BScN, MEd and Linda MacDonald, RN, BN, MEd

"THE LEGAL SYSTEM & PUBLIC AWARENESS LAGGING BEHIND REALITY - The U.S. enacted the Trafficking Victims Protection Act only as recently as 2000. UNICEF's report on Birth Registration was published in 2000. Although there is growing concern, the most severe form of child sexual abuse, sadistic and ritualized child sexual abuse, remains largely unaddressed. Cases are often not prosecuted as such because of the bizarre nature of the crimes or prosecuted as conventional murder, sexual assault, animal cruelty or other felonies. Only a handful of states, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana and Montana have expressly criminalized ritual abuse. Idaho Code § 18-1506A Illinois Revised Statutes, §5/12-33; Louisiana Revised Statutes Ann. §14:107.1; and Montana Code Ann. §45-5-627. Notably, the statutes contain an exemption for 'any state or federally approved, licensed, or funded research project'".  Helen L. McGonigle, Attorney-at-Law, 2004
http://members.aol.com/smartnews/hm04.htm

"Ritual abuse is described as any repeated, systematic mistreatment perpetrated in the name of an ideology, dogma, doctrine or other system of belief. This abuse may be mental, physical, emotional, spiritual or sexual and frequently combines all of these types of abuse in an attempt to condition every aspect of the victim's humanity toward that ideology. Ritualistic abuse is often practiced in the context of religious or pseudo-religious ceremonies. It is supported through chronic instances of individual, non-ceremonial abusive acts where doctrine is incorporated by the perpetrator as a rationalization, either deliberately or spontaneously (because the perpetrator is him or herself a victim of the mind control system). Ceremonial ritual abuse is perpetrated within the guise of numerous spiritual and utilitarian philosophies. It is important to understand that it is not necessarily the ideology that is at fault, but the abuse of the ideology for the purpose of domination or manipulation by members of the hierarchy of the abuse system."

What is criminal ritual abuse?

Criminal ritual abuse is the use of a combination of illegal, methodical, mind-shattering forms of physical and psychological torture perpetrated against infants, children, adolescents and nonconsenting adults in strictly controlled, secretive, ritualistic settings or environments.  Some victims have died from the abuse. Many survivors have reported having been sexually assaulted by individuals and/or groups, tortured, threatened with harm or death, threatened with the harm or death of loved ones or pets, and more.

Criminal ritual abuse is probably the most heinous form of human-against-human abuse imaginable.  However, it should not be confused with legal ritual abuse - particularly some forms of sadomasochism, in which adults willingly consent to be abused by others, and/or consent to be the abusers of willing adult victims, either individually or in group settings.

What is different about criminal occult ritual abuse?

Many survivors of criminal occult ritual abuse have reported that they were also forced to witness and/or participate in harming and even killing animals and other human victims (particularly infants and children), as well as being forced to cannibalize the dismembered remains of "sacrificed" victims and/or participate in group orgies - by "sexually servicing" adult group members and honored guests.

Although there have been reports of victims who, as part of being tortured and/or murdered in occult rituals, were visibly wounded, cut, branded and more; in general, our experience has been that most the perpetrators who sexually assault and torture victims in occult rituals are extremely careful to use methods that leave no noticeable markings.  This is done to protect the perpetrators from detection and prosecution.  (See the Los Angeles County Commission For Women's Report of the Ritual Abuse Task Force at http://www.geocities.com/kidhistory/ra.htm to learn more about specifics of criminal occult ritual abuse.)

What kinds of people are guilty of criminal occult ritual abuse?

Contrary to the popular belief that lone adults or groups of teenagers and adolescents (A.K.A. "dabblers") are primarily responsible for occult ritualistic crimes, most North American survivors of criminal ritual abuse have reported having been severely harmed in secretive settings (basements, caves, tunnels, boats, warehouses, government buildings, Masonic buildings, churches and more) by groups of adults.  The majority of these group members have been reported to be Caucasian, although perpetrators from other ethnic and cultural backgrounds have also been identified.

The most classic form of group criminal occultism is practiced by families and close associates who are often known as "family-generational."  These families and groups perpetuate religious traditions (e.g., Druidism) that were often brought to North America by immigrant ancestors.  Because much of North America is populated by Christians, these individuals learned to practice their alternative religions, and teach them to following generations, in secret, to avoid being ostracized or worse.  Quite a few North American survivors of criminal occult ritual abuse have reported that their own families first introduced them to occult ritual abuse.

Adults who reportedly participate in criminal occult ritual activities appear to have varied occupational, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.  Some survivors have reportedly been ritually abused by individuals having direct access to powerful political and financial resources.  Our experience has been that the criminal occultists who have fewer resources, money, and political clout are more likely to be caught and prosecuted.

A surprising number of criminal occultists also actively participate in mainstream religions. One reason that some of them choose to live double lives is that they are aware that - should they be accused by victims of harming them in occult settings -- the accusers are less likely to be believed.  Another practical reason for living a double life is that being the member of a socially acceptable religious group helps the individual to be increasingly accepted and trusted by others.

Many survivors have reportedly been harmed by "clusters" of these perpetrators, who target and then join specific churches, synagogues, and the like.  One advantage of joining the same church is that these perpetrators can then vouch for one another, should any of them be accused.  They can also gain greater access to the church facilities, to use for blasphemous occult rituals.

Another phenomenon reported by numerous survivors is that some groups of perpetrators have also moved together into neighborhoods.  Again, living in clusters gives them the added advantage of being able to vouch for one another, should any of them be accused.

Because some of these groups of perpetrators specialize in pedophilia, they sometimes seek to either own, run, or thoroughly infiltrate day-care facilities.  This gives them direct access to many young victims, away from parental protection and intervention.  Similarly, some groups have sought employment in public and private school settings.

A surprising number of survivors have reported having been abused in occult rituals by military personnel on military bases and in military facilities.  Some were ritualistically assaulted while placed in military-run daycare facilities.  (Linda Osborne Blood provided documentation about ritualistic abuse of children in such facilities in her book, The New Satanists.)

There seems to be no age limit on a person's involvement in ritually abusing others.  Even the elderly may still participate, and some of the children who have been caught ritually harming others may actually be reenacting what has been done to them in secret, by groups of adults.

Although "loners" are usually arrested and successfully prosecuted for ritually harming others, our experience has been that in many cases, these individuals were only the tip of the iceberg.  In a number of cases, it appears that they were actually members of secretive groups of perpetrators.  While these "lone perpetrators" were apprehended and successfully prosecuted, other members of their groups were not.  This is most unfortunate, because the group members who are not prosecuted are not only free to continue to harm more innocents, but may feel more immune from prosecution, and may - particularly if they are sociopaths - increase the regularity and severity of their crimes against innocents.

Many devout practitioners of "alternative" religions, including Wiccans, other Pagans, Satanists, and Luciferians, choose not to commit such crimes as part of their rituals.  Unfortunately, too many of these practitioners are unfairly attacked or blamed for the harmful and dangerous behaviors of other practitioners who do choose to commit crimes as part of their religious practices.

Many survivors of criminal occult rituals have also reported that they have been brutally harmed by another category of individuals and groups:  these perpetrators appear to use occult religious trappings primarily as an excuse to group rape, sadistically torture, and even murder victims in secretive settings.  In other words, these so-called practitioners appear to be using occult rituals as a smokescreen to confuse and intimidate the victims, and others who learn about their existence, while not actually being devoted to the professed religions.  Such groups are much more likely to use their dissociated victims to perform financially lucrative crimes for the groups, including couriering illegal substances and materials (e.g., drugs and illegal weapons); "breeding" babies for the group (for some Aryan groups, this is a historical tradition); couriering babies and children to be sold through the black market; participating in illegal pornography (e.g., kiddy porn, necrophilia, sadism, and snuff/murder films); prostitution (e.g., children being forced to "sexually service" paying clients), and even torturing or killing rival group leaders, and members who try to break away from the group!  Some of these secretive groups are well financed, utilize modern technology, and are remarkably similar to mafia organizations.  In most cases, these secretive "occult" groups - which appear to be the most dangerous kind - seem to be comprised mostly of sadistic sociopaths.  Some of the leaders of these groups claim that they prefer Satanism and Luciferianism, because they believe that these religions allow them more freedom to rape and otherwise harm children.  For this same reason, Aleister Crowley's version of Satanism is sometimes preferred.

For these and other reasons, we must be very careful not to assume that if a person or group harms victims in ritualistic ways, they do so because they are devout practitioners of that religion.  We must also be careful not to automatically assume that, because a person practices an alternative pagan or occult religion, that he or she is automatically involved in immoral or illegal activities.  And finally, we must be careful not to make the mistake of assuming that because some practitioners do not commit crimes, all practitioners therefore refrain from performing illegal acts.  As with society in general, there is a wide spectrum of morality and criminality.  Some individuals and groups choose to abide by the law, whereas others choose to do their worst to humanity.

Are there other types of religious, criminal ritual abuse?

Not all forms of criminal ritual abuse are perpetrated during occult or alternative religious ceremonies.  We have received numerous reports from survivors of criminal ritual abuse who were harmed during Christian ceremonies  performed by leaders and members of Catholic, Baptist, Pentecostal, Charismatic, Seventh Day Adventist, and Mormon congregations, as well as off-shoot Christian cults.  We have received reports from survivors who were harmed during Judaic, Atheistic, New-Age, Aryan (Nazi, neo-Nazi or White Supremacist), and Native American Indian rites.  We have received other reports from survivors who were ritually abused by Voodoo and Santeria practitioners.  Finally, many survivors of criminal ritualistic abuse have also reported having been sexually and otherwise abused as part of some secretive Masonic rituals.

Our conclusion is that no religious facility, congregation, or group is totally immune from being infiltrated or used by criminals and groups of criminals who seek to do the worst to innocents.

A challenge to legal practitioners of "alternative religions": what if we are right?

Many practitioners of alternative religions in North America who do obey the law, have felt threatened and have been scapegoated since numerous reports of criminal occult ritual abuse began to surface in the 1980s.  A large part of the backlash against these innocents came from media representatives and conservative Christians, who ignorantly painted all occult practitioners with the same wide, black brush.  In other words, they errantly assumed that if some practitioners were raping and torturing and killing babies, children and adults; then all practitioners must be doing the same!

This backlash against innocent practitioners was most unfortunate.  Many of them felt justifiably threatened and angry.  Even now, many of them are afraid of being retaliated against or scapegoated, if they openly acknowledge their religious affiliations and beliefs - particularly those who live in conservative communities!.  Unfortunately, some of these same innocents have chosen to focus their anger onto ritual abuse survivors who simply desire to speak the truth about the atrocities they have experienced!

Our sincere plea to innocent practitioners and groups is this: please do not attack the wounded.  We did not intend for innocents to be ostracized, attacked, or scapegoated.  We do acknowledge that some of us, in our intense pain and terror, made the mistake of reacting negatively towards you, because some of the things you do remind us of the people and groups who did terrible things to us.  We apologize for misdirecting our anger and fear at you, instead of directing it where it belongs - the perpetrators who have harmed us and many others.

We ask you to please be patient with us, and try to understand that in spite of our mistakes, our main concern has been - and continues to be - to shine the light of public attention on those individuals and groups who are effectively ruining your reputations while using your religious rites and practices to severely harm and murder innocents.

We understand that what has been done to you is unfair and wrong.  And we want you to understand that we will work harder to refrain from blaming you for what criminals have chosen to do to us.  We respect your right to practice your religions as you please, as long as you do no harm to yourselves or others; in fact, we do our best to hold ourselves to these same admirable standards.

We ask you to please show reasonable respect for our attempts to help bring an end to criminal occult ritual abuse in North America.  If we are wrong, and no one is being harmed this way, then we deeply apologize that you have been hurt by the backlash against us and the perpetrators.  But if we are right, and you work to unfairly discredit us to protect your own reputations and safety, who is left to fight for the victims?

Because you know which instruments and elements are used in the rituals, surely you can imagine how they can be used by cruel sadists and pedophiles to rape, inflict mental and physical pain, and even destroy lives.  One more rape, torture, or murder victim is one too many.  Surely we can agree on this!

We are not the enemy, and neither are you.  If there is an enemy, it is they.

Believe the Children's Spring, 1997 Report:
Ritual Child Abuse - Convictions and Evidence

Believe the Children (BTC) was a pro-active organization founded by parents of children victimized at daycare facilities run by the McMartin family in California.  It was disbanded shortly after BTC published their ground-breaking report, Ritual Child Abuse - Convictions and Evidence, in their Spring, 1997 newsletter.

Contrary to oft-cited statements from False Memory Syndrome Foundation (FMSF) spokespersons and advocates, sufficient evidence was found at the McMartin daycare center to verify the claims of many of the child victims' statements.  Unfortunately, most of that information was not presented in court, and most of the alleged perpetrators were judged innocent.  For more information, see  Archaeological Investigations of the McMartin Preschool site by E. Gary Stickel, Ph.D. at http://tesserae.org/tess/prose/tunnels2.html.

BTC's retired Executive Director, Elizabeth Vargo, gave Kathleen Sullivan express permission to reproduce their Spring, 1997 report on our website.

http://www.newsmakingnews.com/karencuriojonesarchive.htm

Ms. Jones, A.K.A. Diana Napolis, is a Social Worker and a long-term advocate for victims of abuse, including victims of criminal occult ritual abuse.  She has been instrumental in providing information about Michael Aquino, an ex-Army psywar expert and founder and leader of the infamous Temple of Set, who allegedly molested and ritually abused children in Presidio, California.  (Michael continues to vociferously deny these allegations, and to legally harass those who attempt to bring attention to his alleged crimes.)  Although numerous attempts have been made to harass and discredit Ms. Jones A.K.A. Napolis, the information presented in her website appears to be credible and well-documented.
