Research projects conducted by Persons Against Ritual Abuse-Torture (RAT)

The results of the reproductive harms research questions have been written into a paper and submitted to a journal. Jeanne Sarson and Linda MacDonald are presently waiting to see if the paper will be accepted for publication. They tried to get everyone's story out there, so please know that your participation in that set of research is vital to their work of helping others and changing the world for children. For women who have not completed the 10 reproductive harms questions and would like to do so, go to http://www.ritualabusetorture.org/reproductiveharm.pdf

Sarson and MacDonald have developed ten new research questions addressing ritual abuse-torture and connections to the military. Survivors can participate in this part of their research online by going to http://pub25.bravenet.com/vote/vote.php?usernum=2120596064&cpv=2

Survivor groups in Utah and E-mail group for support people

Face to Face began as a peer support group for ritual abuse survivors.  It has evolved into groups that vary in their formats and the people they serve.  These groups function independently from any sponsoring organization.  They are being promoted, but not sponsored, by Mr. Light & Associates, Inc.  They are peer support groups, which means the meetings are run by the attendees themselves.

1996 (fictionalized memoir)
by Gloria Naylor
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?z=y&EAN=9780883782637&itm=5
"In this startling account, we find Naylor buying a house on St. Helena Island, off the coast of South Carolina. Here she seeks the serenity of a writer's life. She intends to enjoy life, relax, write in peace, and tend to her garden. However, Naylor's tranquility is ruined by a woman who feels threatened by her presence. When this woman's fears spur a massive covert surveillance operation against Naylor in 1996, the year becomes one of discomfort and confusion for Naylor. For the author, this seems to be just another example of the how racism usually translates into gross misunderstanding. This gut-wrenching story is sure to be a talker."

Forgiveness and Child Abuse: Would YOU Forgive?
by Lois Einhorn, Ph.D.
http://www.rdrpubs.citymax.com/catalog/item/3014102/2948860.htm
"Employing techniques similar to those used in Nazi concentration camps, author Lois Einhorn’s father and mother physically and sexually abused her and her sister. They forced the girls to torture each other and to torture and destroy live and stuffed animals. Dying would have been a relief. For years, Lois suffered agonizing anguish and guilt because she acquiesced, complied, and succumbed to her parents’ power.   Could she ever forgive?...During her healing process, Dr. Einhorn shared her story with influential people from a variety of fields, including clergy, politicians, authors, entertainers, doctors, professors, psychologists, and even death-row prisioners. She asked them: 'What would YOU do? You are a child in a family that sadistically abuses. You are forced to torture and destroy. What should you do now as an adult? Do you forgive your parents? HOW do you forgive yourself?'"

"53 Contributors including Mumia Abu-Jamal, Dr. Patch Adams, Edward Asner, Runin "Hurricane" Carter, Laura Davis, Thomas Eagleton, Albert Ellis, Paul Ferrini, Lynne Finney, Linda Hogan, Derrick Jensen, Bill T. Jones, Mary Elizabeth King, Dr. Sammy Lee, Robert Muller, Daniel Quinn, Pete Seger, Dr. Bernie Siegel, Gerry Spence, Mike Thaler, Richard Vatz, Kurt Waldheim, Kenneth Wapnick, 2 death-row prisoners, and many more."

Mine & Yours: Human Rights for Kids
by Joy Berry for Amnesty International USA
http://www.powerhousebooks.com/powerhousekids/mineandyours.html
"In 1946 the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, headed by Eleanor Roosevelt, began to formulate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The ideals compiled by the commission have become beacons of dignity and hope for people the world over. For the first time ever, essential human rights, as codified in the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child, are being presented in a book specifically for children. Joy Berry’s Mine & Yours: Human Rights for Kids, created in association with Amnesty International USA, defines and explains for kids their rights, and teaches them how to assert their rights with integrity and responsibility. In keeping with Amnesty International’s mission and written in Joy Berry’s easy-to-understand style, Mine & Yours delivers a message that crosses the boundaries of nationality, culture, and religion. Throughout the book, illustrations by the award-winning artist Nicole Richardson depict colorful scenes from around the world, teaching children about diverse global customs, animals, and regions."

Non-State Actor Torture in Canada: A Shadow Report
by Jeanne Sarson and Linda MacDonald
http://www.ritualabusetorture.org/shadowreport.pdf
According to Sarson and MacDonald: "This report...has been sent to Canadian government officials and to people stationed in or connected to the United Nations (UN) in Geneva, asking that action be taken to recognize the existence of all forms of non-state torture, including RAT, as human rights violations. Although it is mainly a Canadian response to the report put out by the Canadian Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights in Relation to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, it does include a section on the trans-border Canada-United States ritual abuse-torture connections, including the human trafficking that occurs within such families/groups, as well as information on RAT and trafficking for human experimentation ... We thank all who worked with us by giving consent to share drawings and personal ordeals which were included in the Shadow Report. Sharing such personal 'stories' brings reality to readers."

"Life is an ongoing struggle for those who have been severely traumatized. Here, leading trauma experts present a theory and practice for dealing with chronic trauma. Recognizing the structural dissociation (splitting away of part of the self) that often results from trauma and proposing a plan for action that a survivor must implement in order to put his or her haunted past to rest, this book will be of interest to researchers as well as clinicians."
